October 22nd - pumpkin harvest and weeding bonanza

Its coming up to Hallowe'en so we decided to harvest our pumpkins. Here is a photo of our crop. A bit small but at least they're the right shape! Not bad for a first attempt. Next year we'll try planting them in a manure rich soil and hopefully we'll have HUGE pumpkins.

After a great burst of work by all the class we managed to take up all the weeds. We are ready now to top up our beds with topsoil and dig in some manure to get ready for Spring.

In the right hand corner you can see our soft fruit bushes. These are blackcurrant, redcurrant, raspberry and strawberries, these are the only plants we are keeping over the years (perennial).

The pumpkin problem!

The top picture is a pumpkin grown in the school garden. The bottom one is a plant taken home by one of our students and planted at home (around the same time as we planted ours at school). These photos were taken in October within a week of each other! Looks like we need more manure in our school garden to feed the pumpkins!

Garden in October 2009

Here is a photo of the garden on October 12th. We harvested potatoes, carrots, onions, lettuce, beetroot and lots more during the Summer of 2009. Now we are ready to prepare the beds for next years planting.
